Tonight from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. CST on 98.7WFMT Chicago and wfmt.com we listen to several works by Russia's leading living composer, Sofia Gubaidulina, the subject of the University of Chicago Contempo concert this Wednesday February 15th at 7:30 p.m. at the Harris Theater in Millennium Park.
The Russian-Tatar Gubaidulina, who turned 80 in October, received an honorary doctorate from Chicago in June, the first creative artist in any discipline to be so recognized. Composer and artistc director of Contempo Shulamit Ran was the faculty nominator for the degree, arranged a commission from Gubaidulina, and organized Wednesday's concert with members of eighth blackbird (props on Sunday's Grammy Award!), Pacifica Quartet, guest soprano Tony Arnold and others.
Tonight's program -- which includes In Croce with 'cellist Peter Wispelwey and bayan player An Raskin, the Quartet No.4 with Kronos, a flute and piano work, and a brand new release on Naxos of a brand new work for bayan, percussion, and string orchestra -- willthen be available as a free podcast at wfmt.com/criticalthinking.
